one of my favorite things about this video is the return of the "this is a video game" opening from the sonic 1/dkc 1 videos. I'm trying to get my girlfriend into your content and I'm recommending more newer videos (because they're just better sorry josh) and in trying to see this the way she would without the early TGC context it's really making me realize how baked in this is to its (not actual) time of production.

While I also think DKC1&2 are better, it's not by much. DKC3 is high up there with the best platformers on the system. In comparison to the other two the flaws are superficial. This was the last great DKC game imo. DK64 was too diferent, Tropical Freeze was better than Returns, but I still like the smooth gameplay of the SNES trilogy more. So I'm still out for a real DKC4.

I'm telling you, Prime 4 is going to be a cross-gen release and that makes it all the more exciting! Three years ago we had metroid and zelda starring in the direct. And this time they're back again. I'm hyped to find out what's up with the metroids (as long as it's not just...federation doing federation things again like in Fusion)!

It continues to amaze me how people view the Switch as some amazing pivot in Nintendo's history, when really it's just an evolution of the Wii U. Rather than making the docked experience the starting point and trying to cram a modicum of portability into it as the Wii U did, the Switch is a robust handheld with an enhanced experience while docked. I'd be curious to know how much of the underlying architecture is shared, given how many of the games are Wii U ports. I'd wager ToTK is just BoTW without the hardware constraints of the Wii U. The point I'm surprised didn't come up much in this episode - which is great as always - is the eShop. Easily the best and most comprehensive legacy game selection we've ever gotten from Nintendo. As much as the console flopped and its games as a result (borne out by their success as Switch ports) I think the Wii U's legacy has to include all the fantastic legacy eShop titles.

The nostalgia-waves that crashed over me when I heard that Screw attack intro... the years truly don't stop coming. At any rate, this direct really was about fulfilling many small but passionate fandom's wishes rather than presenting big mainstream blow-outs. Mario & Luigi, Metroid Prime 4, Zelda starring in her own game, Ace Attourney Investigations AND Marvel Vs Capcom... it's a bunch of small but intense dreams combining to light up the internet, games that may not get massive numbers but which get the passionate buzzing and builds builds hype in a different way than blockbusters do (minus Mario Party Jamboree which, let's be real, will handily outsell anything else in this Direct) to the degree that even if none of these games actually appeal to you, you can't deny the enthusiasm they have generated. I see so many dull people go "why are you happy to buy things again" missing that some of these games may have been missed because one wasn't in a position to play them at the time, or never made it overseas or had years since the latest lifesigns were seen. People love a comeback! People love to see there's interest in something they love. I feel like people who say that are the ones who just see games as products to be consumed, when they can't see how enthusiasm that something we thought was long gone returns is due to genuine emotional responses. In a world where the bigger trends seem to be spending six years to create cinematic third person shooters or the most wallet-draining always-online games you've ever seen, people get one brief moment where what they grew up on or smaller games in general that will just make SOME money instead of all of the money, get to shine. Nintendo provided me with a moment like that- and that's all I need to love this direct.

Honestly Nintendo needs to diversify into a PC Port business model. Alongside their hardware which to me falls somewhere between quirky/eccentric and underpowered/unusable, many of us old school fans would be willing to pay a reasonable fee to be able to play our favorite older games. This would also be a great portal to do like Sega did, and bring in these indie devs.

Knowing that ship building and exploration element is present has kept me from ever trying this one. I share your sentiment of mechanics like this being tacked onto an action game being awful. if I'm honest, I never want mechanics like that in any game I play regardless of genre. I think I may be more averse than you, because it still sounds insufferable to me, even after your description of it not being too egregious by most peoples' standards. I keep hoping someday, a rom hack will come along where that mechanic is bypassed. It will probably never happen sadly.

Yeah, wow, that certainly was one crazy direct. I had a friend of mind pose the same question about "Is Prime 4 running on switch hardware". And, I just really don't get it. It looks good, but it doesn't look good because of particularly incredibly graphical hardware, it looks good because of art design and direction. The truth is that many many more games could look that good but to do that requires a colossal amount of effort and talent. You need people willing to do things manually, to paint things in by hand and not have the GPU generate it for you. All that sort of thing is hard. Throwing some bloom , raytracing, and autogenerated reflections and other effects is. I'd argue in a lot of the current issues we're reaching is where the amount of effort to make something great is so massive it's bordering on insane. That's why so many people are desperately hoping for AI tools to help relieve them of the grunt work, in a similar fashion to how Disney used CG to help with grunt work in backgrounds and such for their features. Once again just like so much of human history, human talent and labor is the bottleneck. :D Most of my gaming is on PC but really the hardware most games need these days has really flattened. And I've noticed a trend of people not really grasping just how much it has flattened. In fact it often seems like people are in denial about hardware development slowing down despite so many metrics and benchmarks pointing it out. For example, the old PC I built in 2012 has run everything I throw at it with no issues up until recently this past year. It did get occasional graphics card updates and some new hard drives but CPU, RAM, and everything else did not change. And the GPU updates stopped with a 1080 Ti which is now quite old. So how did this work out? Well, there's two big fronts, CPUs and GPUs. On the GPU front somethign that keeps getting overlooked is pretty much all the benchmarks show that by and large there was little benefit for expensive graphics cards over 1080p. Everyone was chasing 1440p and 2160p. To the point AMD and Nvidia invented frame generation and upscale technology to be able to display a 4k image. But add to this that 99.9 percent of people don't have a display big enough to get the full benefit of 2160p. This is not a new story. Back in the day when displays were going from 720p to 1080p lots of people didn't have a tv big enough for that either as TVs were often under 40". Well tech advanced and bigger TVs came down and we got benefits out of 1080p, but 2160p? If you sit about 10 feet from a 2160p display that display needs to be 108 inches in size to get the full benefit of it. That's a size of display that starts to get absurd to have in home. It's pretty much just the realm of projectors. And you can't just sit closer to a TV because you have viewing angles to consider as there is such a thing as sitting too close to a display. So just the way we view traditional screen naturally puts a cap on just how much resolution is beneficial and it appears to be roughly somewhere between the 1080p to the 1440p or so mark. And on the CPU end of things, if you look at CPUs for the past twenty years or so you may have noticed there is a trend of adding more cores, instruction sets, or extra features to these chips rather than adding more clock cycles. Current tech already is cramming about as much instructions as are physically possible without errors into current silicon. "Just giving it more horsepower" isn't really an option anymore. So chips are instead developing in parallel paths that make the chip work smarter or add more multitasking functions rather than just being stronger. And this is good and all, but simply put games don't need massive tons of multitasking processes. It helps, and there's definitely game ideas and types that benefit from more cores than others (dwarf fortress.) But most traditional games? Not so much. So if you combine these two trends you start to realize that unless you try to chase after a very high resolution you can actually get a lot of game performance with very little. That's why the Steam Deck works so well. And the Switch with it's Tegra X1 architecture is basically the same idea, it's just a lot earlier and not nearly as well actualized as AMD's solutions would come to be which have basically pushed Nvidia aout of the APU space. The APU space is interesting because these days a AMD APU with Radeon graphics built into it will do pretty much everything you want it to, and look good doing it. I was recently doing all my PC gaming on a Ryzen 6800U handheld and the only two games that made it struggle were Helldivers 2 and Star Citizen, two games that are known for not being well optimized. Nothing had any issues when I was running it. And to be honest I could have really done all my PC gaming on a Steam Deck if just accepted not playing anything extremely niche. That's pretty crazy when you think about it. This is why GPU prices are surging. Because Nvidia and AMD had realized that the market for these cards is slowly drying up as the forces to push people to buy these cards are dying down. So if you can't sell high volume, you have to sell at boutique prices. Now there certainly are things coming down the pipe that are going to need higher end hardware. Time isn't standing still. It's just those pushes are coming in the form of VR and AI. It's just not coming out of traditional gaming like it was in the day of old. At least for now until there's a big change in the industry.

Regarding the Ice Missile / Ice Beam thing, Samus still has the weakness to ice she inherited from Metroids. She is still unable to use the ice beam. Personally, I like that change. Before, switching between the regular beam and ice beam was always awkward. Giving the ice effect to missiles instead really streamlines the gameplay.
